| I love the rich tropical tones on this splendid Dwarf Snapdragon, which add so much warmth to garden or container. Forsted Sunset is renowned for its variegated leaves, which keep the plant lovely even when it's not blooming, but you may become sold on the flowers as I have, too! These 1-inch blooms combine rich orange, gold, and raspberry tones, as vibrant as a Hawaiian sunset but much longer lasting! They are equally well suited for spring or fall growth, offering an extra-long season of color that you'll really appreciate. Held on bloomspikes about 7 or 8 inches long, they dominate the compact little 12-inch-high, 8-inch-wide plant. But the real breakthrough is the splashes of creamy-white on the foliage, and for this Frosted Sunset won a Fleuroselect Novelty Award in Europe. Each leaf is individually patterned, for a lovely effect in plantings large or small. It's a one-of-a-kind look for Snapdragon, and one you'll enjoy both before and after the flowering season. If you have never "snapped" a Snapdragon, here is how to do it: You'll notice that the blooms form two separate cupped clusters that meet in the middle, like jaws. Gently squeeze the sides of the jaws, and the two clusters will separate, just like a mouth opening. The space is just the right size for a child's finger to poke into the dragon's mouth. Release the bloom and the jaws "snap" closed! Seeds may be direct-sown or started indoors for earlier blooms. Snaps are cool-season annuals that bloom in spring and fall in warm areas, summer in colder climates. In very warm locations they may winter over if mulched. They do best in full sun to light shade. Pkt is 100 seeds. |
