 Onion Mars
Bigger and Longer-Lasting -- Great for the North!
These giant magenta globes are sweet when first harvested, then turn more pungent with storage.
100 days. The best long-day red onion for northern climates, Mars offers sweet fresh eating and terrific long-term storage ability. These huge magenta globes are red to the center when the tops are allowed to dry down completely before harvest, giving you more juicy, peppery goodness in every slice!

Measuring a full 6 to 8 inches in diameter, these onions are a deep, rich red. If eaten fresh, their flavor is sweet rather than pungent, but if cured and allowed to mature in storage, they tend to be much stronger. You can't go wrong with this dependable favorite!

The tops reach 3 feet tall, and should be allowed to dry and fall over before harvesting the bulbs, if at all possible. Widely adapted, Mars is a big improvement over classic favorites such as Burgermeister, demonstrating much greater vigor and more intense flavor. With a storage ability of 4 to 6 months, this Onion will carry you through winter . . . deliciously! Zones 5-9.
