50 days. Synonym: 'Cosse Violette.' Our absolute favorite for big yields of lovely dark blue to purple pods on elegantly climbing plants, Purple-Podded is an heirloom French bean with lovely violet blooms in addition to its huge yields of delicious beans. Very early-maturing, it serves as a "first crop" before the runner beans take over, and keeps producing faithfully well into autumn. You cannot ask for anything more -- except Certified Organic seed, grown in all-natural conditions to assure you of the true look and flavor that has been delighting gardeners and their dinner guests since the mid-19th century.Known as Cosse Violette in earlier days, this vine quickly shoots up 5 feet or so high, setting gorgeous deep purple blooms before the fruit. When the beans do appear, they are set in large clusters, slightly twisted, with a very slender silhouette and a color so deep it appears nearly black. 6 to 8 inches long (often even larger), they are delicious raw, and are a mainstay of cooked vegetable dishes, though they lose their lovely blue-purple tones in cooking and become "merely" green! Purple-Podded Climbing is vigorous and very long-bearing, yet grows easily in any sunny, well-drained soil, preferably on the acidic and sandy side. Be sure to work the plant back into the soil or add it to your compost heap at season's end -- this legume is a terrific soil-builder! Pkt is 50 seeds. |
