![]() MIRAI™ The Taste of the Future! Every once in a while a true plant phenomenon comes along, and Corn Mirai™ is just such a miracle. This amazing corn is so sweet and tender that it has captured the Japanese market, and in all of the American locations where it is available, it has become an instant sensation. Gourmet chefs pay premium prices to use it in their recipes, and folks drive for miles to purchase it at roadside stands. And now, it is available as seed for growing in your home garden! Despite its Japanese name (which means both "taste" and "the future is coming" -- how appropriate!) and reputation, Mirai™ was developed on a small farm in Illinois. Like so many remarkable things, it was an accident -- in the process of trying to develop new, more disease-resistant varieties of sweet corn, they created Mirai, which was so delicious that it literally stopped them in their tracks. They knew the flavor was superior to any they'd ever sampled, but because the plant needs to be harvested by hand, none of the big American corn manufacturers were interested. So they went to Japan, where most corn is still grown on small farms and picked by hand. In no time Mirai™ had captured an astonishing 35% of the total Japanese corn market! As soon as Mirai™ took off in Japan, small growers in America began to beg for the seed, but the growers released only a small amount, continuing to trial and test it. The results were spectacular!
As you might expect from a corn originally bred to fight disease, Mirai™ has terrific resistance to problems such as Stewart's Wilt and Common Rust. It's just as easy to grow as traditional varieties, but appreciates a little more "elbow room" in between each plant. And it must be isolated from Sugary Enhanced (SE) varieties of corn, though it will grow fine among other Supersweets. Mirai™ likes warm soil, so wait until the ground has thoroughly warmed in spring before planting it out. (This is a good way to isolate it from other corn, by the way -- sow it at least 2 weeks after your Sugar Enhanced types!) Give it full sun and plenty of water during the growth season, and you'll be rewarded by big yields of the most delectable corn you have ever tasted in your life. Mirai™ is available as a solid yellow, an 8 inch long bicolor ear, a 5 inch long mini yellow ear, or an 8 inch long white ear. They demonstrate great tip fill (meaning that the kernels continue all the way to the tip of the ear, for an extra bite or two!), good husk coverage, and great staying power after harvest -- up to 6 weeks in the fridge! You may never get to test their endurance, though, because they get eaten up so fast! Mirai™ costs a bit more than other corn, but it is a taste sensation so amazing that it just may become the only corn you grow! Some folks in this line drove 100+ miles (and paid a premium price) to get their hands on Corn Mirai™! Available at Park Seed -- Mirai™ seed for the home gardener!
