The Plant that Doesn't Mind Getting its Feet Wet!
Big double blooms in early summer!
Such an elegant plant for the perennial border or waterside garden! Japanese Iris is difficult to find in this country, yet it is easy to grow and thrives in damp soil -- a godsend to those of us with water features! These huge, double white blooms, brightly streaked with purple, are spectacular in the vase or bobbing atop sturdy stems in the garden, and the reed-like foliage stays fresh for three seasons every year. 'Light at Dawn' is an exceptionally beautiful cultivar, reaching 3 feet tall and just 15 inches wide. The blooms have a crepe-paper appearance quite at odds with their durable nature, and the standards are wide open, gracefully hanging above the falls. Magnificent! The roots of this Japanese Iris need plenty of moisture, but a waterside location is not essential -- just keep the plant well-watered in dry spells and site it in any fully sunny to partly shaded spot in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 12 to 15 inches apart for wonderfully dense coverage. Zones 4-8.
