A huge breakthrough for Oriental Poppies, 'Carmen' offers a brand-new plant habit that will solve the dilemma of many gardeners trying to grow these beautiful flowers. Rather than arising on a long stem 2 to 3 feet high, these blooms arise on stems just a bit more than a foot high. This keeps them protected from wind, brings them to the front of the border where you can enjoy their beauty up close, and enables gardeners who have never had much luck with full-sized varieties to grow magnificent Poppies in containers as well as the garden! The flowers are breathtaking, with a double row of crepe-y petals, crisply serrated and colored a bright, rich red. They surround a fascinating black center, and often feature a black blotch near the base of a petal. 4 to 6 inches wide, they are ideal for cutting, but also look lovely on the plant, arising from the center around a generous rosette of long, slender, lobed foliage. 'Carmen' blooms in early summer, but the foliage keeps the plant attractive through spring and after bloom. Give it full sunshine and very well-drained soil a bit on the dry side. Quite cold-tolerant, this is a fine plant for the far north as well as temperate climates. Zones 3-7.
