Butterfly Plant 'Gay Butterflies'
Asclepias tuberosa 'Gay Butterflies'
Butterfly Plant 'Gay Butterflies': 5-inch clusters of tiny, somewhat flat-topped blooms of bright red, yellow, and orange atop forest-green foliage. Plant reaches 2 feet tall and wide.
This native is superbly heat- and drought-tolerant!

Armfuls of Red, Yellow, and Orange All Summer Long!
The 5-inch flowerheads bring butterflies by the dozen and turn an ordinary sun garden into a blaze of warm colors!

One of the finest native plants we know, Butterfly Weed is a must-have for any dry, sunny location, and this mix of jewel-bright shades of red, orange, and yellow is the most spectacular combination yet! Monarch butterflies love its nectar, but don't feel bad about cutting the huge 5-inch flowerheads for gorgeous, long-lasting fresh or dried indoor arrangements -- this tough perennial is so floriferous that you can cut all you need without noticeably diminishing the color show!

'Gay Butterflies' is exactly what its name suggests -- warm-toned, light-hearted, lively color from early summer right up till frost. The plant reaches just 2 feet tall and wide, so you can dot it among other heat-loving perennials or plant a wide swathe of festive color! I like to bring in the birds by interplanting it with dazzling Echinacea,' but it also a fine companion to its traditional all-summer bloom partner, Coreopsis. It withstands just about anything except soggy soil, so resist the temptation to plant it alongside Yarrow.

As if all these blooms and butterflies weren't enough, 'Gay Butterflies' rounds out its long season with a fine display of light brown seedheads. I like to cut these for accents in fresh and dried arrangements, but they also dry magnificently on the plant, adding a little texture to the late-fall garden.

If planting several 'Gay Butterflies' together, space the plants about a foot to 18 inches apart. Take care with drainage, but ignore just about everything else -- 'Gay Butterflies' is a tough cookie that sneers at lousy fertility, weeks of blazing heat, and long dry spells! So plant a big stand of this American charmer, dust off the binoculars, and get ready to start identifying Monarchs and Fritillaries by the dozen! Zones 3-9.
