Wild Sweet William
Phlox divaricata 'London Grove Blue'
Wild Sweet William: Single 1-inch periwinkle-blue blooms above evergreen foliage on plants 8 to 10 inches high, 2 feet wide.
Sweetly fragrant, these flowers call all butterflies to visit your garden!

Carefree Blooms Twice a Year
A lovely groundcover for any partly shaded spot.

One of the purest joys of spring is Woodland Phlox, a native groundcover that blooms freely early in the season, with a sweet fragrance that can make you swoon. A plant to be grown by the dozen, Wild Sweet William often repeats in early summer, and offers fresh foliage year-round, with a burgundy cast to brighten the winter months.

Just 8 to 10 inches high, this plant sets its starry 1-inch blooms above the spring-green foliage in big 5-inch clusters. These blooms are a bit larger than those of other P. divaricata varieties, star-shaped with widely-spaced petals of soft lavender around a tiny dark red eye. They are marvelously fragrant -- the sort of scent you'd like to roll in! -- and are butterfly magnets, bringing the first winged guests of the season into the garden. Cut the plant back after the flowers pass and you may be rewarded with a second, just as intense, flowering in early summer!

Wild Sweet William spreads up to 2 feet wide over several seasons. It's actually quite compact, so the foliage tends to be dense and uniform, not rangy or spotty as in older varieties. It is wonderfully mildew-resistant, another huge advantage over both the species and older cultivars. It grows and flowers best in organically enriched, well-drained soil, and it appreciates a summer mulch to keep from drying out. Hardy from one end of the country to the other, it puts on a fine show in winter, when its leaves turn a vivid shade of burgundy and remain that way for many weeks! Zones 3-9.
