Japanese Iris 'Katy Mendez'
Iris ensata 'Katy Mendez'
Japanese Iris 'Katy Mendez':
Very free-flowering, this is a fine choice for the cutting garden as well as the border, meadow, and cottage garden.

Award-Winning Intense Color!
A favorite for nearly two decades.

Ever since this stunning Japanese Iris was introduced several decades ago, it has been both the gardeners' and the experts' favorite. The deep, rich violet-blue of the blooms is extraordinary, scored with dark blue veins, a white edge, and bold yellow flares. Super for garden or vase, these flowers are simply irresistible.

The blooms measure 3 to 4 inches wide and are very full, with broad, overlapping petals nicely textured and held outward. Appearing in early to midsummer, they make a nice change of pace from Tall Bearded Iris, thriving in the hotter, more humid regions of zone 9 where many Irises fear to tread! The plant reaches 2 1/2 feet tall and about 1 1/2 feet wide (spreading over time, as Iris is wont to do). If you like 'Katy Mendez,' consider pairing it with pure white 'Lace Ruff,' another Japanese Iris with a very full look and a complete contrast in color.

'Katy Mendez' was introduced by master Iris breeder Currier McEwen in 1989, and has proven vigorous and very floriferous. It was given the Award of Garden Merit, the Royal Horticulture Society's highest honor, in 1995. Add this superior Japanese Iris to your landscape this season and see what a difference great breeding can make! Zones 4-9.
