Huge Blue Blooms on Plants that Just Keep Getting Better!
Naturalizes readily in moist or even damp soils.
One of the most magnificent Siberian Irises ever grown, this wide-petaled, very floriferous variety offers dark violet-blue blooms extravagantly ruffled and curled. With no visible signals, the solid color is particularly effective even in small plantings, and is a splendid cutflower. One of Dr. McEwen's finest! 'Ruffles Plus' begins blooming about 2 weeks after the Tall Bearded Irises in the garden. Like all Siberian Irises, it is a good bit more gardenworthy than its more famous cousins. It withstands drought and heat very well, even though it loves damp and even wet soils and will colonize along the waterside happily. The blooms are huge, with each stem bearing multiple buds. But 'Ruffles Plus' has something even more exceptional -- it is a tetraploid, meaning it has twice the chromosomes of traditional (diploid) Siberians. This gives it vigor and bloom power to spare! The creation of Currier McEwen, 'Ruffles Plus' comes by its beauty and vigor honestly. Dr. McEwen began breeding Irises seriously when he retired from medical practice in the 1950s, and was the first to introduce the concept of tetraploidy in Siberian and Japanese Irises. The doctor's retirement career proved incredibly successful -- he lived to 101 years of age, introducing hundreds of new Irises, writing the definitive book on Siberian Irises, and winning every award available from horticultural societies. 'Ruffles Plus' iteself won an Honorable Mention from the American Iris Society when it was introduced in 1982; we are also proud to offer another McEwen creation, Japanese Iris 'Katy Mendez.' You can't beat a McEwen Iris for nonstop garden performance! This upright plant reaches about 30 inches high and 18 inches wide, though it will spread over time and should be divided every few years for more glorious color. If you are new to Siberian Iris growing, discover the simple way to extend the beauty begun by the more familiar Tall Beardeds for weeks of summer pleasure! Zones 3-8.
