Papaver superpoppy hybrid 'Heartbeat'
An Entirely New Kind of Poppy -- More Vigorous and Longer-Lasting! Plant Patent Applied For. Stand back and prepare to be amazed -- the first Superpoppy is here! Three decades in the breeding, 'Heartbeat' announces a whole new era for one of America's favorite cutflowers. These blooms are just as large and beautiful as the giant Oriental poppies, but they have all the garden vigor of some of the native species, such as the California poppy. They last and last in the garden on tirelessly floriferous plants. And best of all, they stand up beautifully to rain, wind, and extreme heat! You won't believe the new Superpoppy until you see it blazing its deep red blooms across your own sunny landscape! First, let's talk about the blooms. Reaching 5 1/2 inches wide with a double layer of crepe-papery, perfectly-held petals surrounding a huge black center, they look for all the world like Oriental Poppies . . . except that there are so many of them. And they hold up so well on the stem. And they just keep coming from late spring well into summer! Cut all you like -- they're gorgeous in the vase -- but remember that with 'Heartbeat,' you can let them remain on the plant and still enjoy their color and form despite rough weather! Second, the breeding. The idea of the Superpoppy began many years ago in the mind of James DeWelt, an American breeder who was interested in making a garden poppy that would be more floriferous, colorful, and vigorous than any single poppy species. He combined numerous species, including P. atlanticum, californicum, rupifragrum, somniferum, and orientale in thousands upon thousands of crosses until he had it: a plant that would set a dozen or more large, beautiful blooms at once, blooms that could withstand rain, wind, and strong sun. And here we have 'Heartbeat.' Third, the gardenworthiness. All poppies are magnificent, of course, their crepe-y blooms drenched in color that just seems more intense than anything else the garden has to offer. But part of their beauty is that fragility of petal strength (as anyone who has ever picked wild poppies knows!). And that's what really makes 'Heartbeat' so special. It looks just like a finicky Orientale Poppy, yet it's so garden-tough! Leave the flowers on the plant and as they pass, enjoy a second season of color from their big, dramatic black seedpods 1 1/2 inches long and wide. Enjoy these blooms in numbers unheard-of in older varieties, so that you get more than double the flowers from fewer than half the plants! And never fear a freak storm again with this Superpoppy! This plant grows 32 to 36 inches high and about 2 feet wide. It likes the same full sun and slightly dry, loose, light soil favored by most other poppies. It is not a plant for the deep south, though those of us who continue to try to grow poppies in humid climates and heavier soils will find 'Heartbeat' much, much longer-blooming and better-performing than others. (Expect earlier blooms and a shorter season -- but hey, if you're a poppy addict as we are, that's perfectly acceptable!) If you have a patch of bare soil anywhere in the sunny, well-drained garden, please devote it to this Superpoppy. You will be delighted and continually amazed by its beauty and power! Zones 3-8.
