Plant Patent Applied For. Well, here you have it -- the knock-down, drag-out must-have plant of the season! 'Frenzy' is the first of the exciting new Commotion™ series of Gaillardias, and once you get a glimpse of its richly colored, fluted blooms you might not even care that it flowers from spring 'til frost and is very easy to grow. Who can resist those multicolored flowers? The blooms begin innocently enough as red buds, offering no clue to their coming glory. Then they open to dark red, rayed blooms with bright yellow tips, like flares for hummingbirds and butterflies. (And these garden visitors take notice, believe us!) As they mature, the red becomes more watermelon and even dark orange toned, so that a big stand of Frenzies with both new and older blooms is a multicolored delight. Something about these bright tones makes us think of popsicles, but their display isn't limited to high summer. Expect them to start in late spring and continue well into fall, where their handsome maroon to burgundy cones match the Mums and Asters of that mellow season. 'Frenzy' is a long-lasting cutflower, stealing the show in any indoor arrangement. But it looks so good on the plant that you may just have to design two plantings: a display site and a secret cutting stash! Mounded and very compact, the plant reaches just 18 to 24 inches high and spreads about 24 inches wide, every inch boasting long, wiry bloomstems. The Commotion™ series comes to us from John Dixson of Skagit Gardens, and puts older fluted Blanket Flowers to shame with its higher petal count, more intense colors, and heavier bloom strength. Cut back the old blooms as they pass to encourage even faster budding, and shear the entire plant back to about 3 inches from the ground for even better branching and heavier flowering each season. Grab this wonder plant while you can -- we predict it will earn its name when it begins flying out of our fields and off our shelves! Zones 5-10.
