Heucherella 'Alabama Sunrise' PPAF
Heucherella villosa 'Alabama Sunrise' PPAF
Heucherella 'Alabama Sunrise' PPAF:
Easy for the shade border, it adds bright, unexpected color that never goes out of "bloom."

Changes its Look Every Season!
Not only does the red veining remain into summer, but the leaves turn orange and pink in autumn!

Plant Patent Applied For. Why wait for blooms when these big Maple-like leaves look beautiful from spring until frost on easy-to-grow shade-loving plants? 'Alabama Sunrise' is a spectacular new Foamy Bells, radiant with long-lasting maroon veins on leaves that turn from pure golden to soft chartreuse, then dazzle with pink and orange tones in autumn. And as if all that weren't enough, it blooms too!

Just a foot high and about 20 inches wide, this mounding plant is very well-branched, unfurling its softly lobed foliage in early to mid-spring. The combination of gold and red is dazzling, especially in the shade border, where many perennials are slow to break dormancy and don't have much to say for themselves until summer and fall. 'Alabama Sunrise' is a glorious exception, keeping its golden tones well into summer before gradually becoming chartreuse. But before you have time to regret the "passing of the gold," autumn is here and with it stunning new colors!

The white flowers, small and bell-shaped, appear on tall, slender 20-inch stems and dangle well above the foliage. Some folks don't care for them; we think they are a nice attention-getting flag for the foliage (which is looking great in late spring, when the flowers appear), but we also like them as filler for cut-flower arrangements. The star of the show is definitely the foliage, which stands up brilliantly to heat and humidity, even in far southern and southwestern climates. You just can't go wrong with 'Alabama Sunrise'!

And just in case you're wondering what in heaven's name a Heucherella is, it's a hybrid of Heuchera and Tiarella, two perennials so similar that identifying them drives horticulture students mad! Heucherellas have actually been around for nearly 100 years, but they didn't really "catch on" until Alan Bloom (of Blooms Nursery in England) began breeding them in the 1950s. Now they are a mainstay of vibrant shade borders and fine containers, beloved because they are so easy to grow and their large, colorful leaves are far longer-lasting than any blooms!

Space these plants about 15 to 18 inches apart in the partly- to fully shaded garden, and water them well the first year to get them established. Then sit back and enjoy the show! Zones 4-9.
