Few Daylilies bloom well in the shade, but 'Cherry Valentine' offers a nice display in part or dappled sunlight, making it invaluable in borders where full sun is hard to come by. A lovely pink-and-crimson combo with a large eyezone and matching ruffled edges, this award-winner is not only one of the showiest varieties around, it's also one of the most useful! The blooms measure 4 1/2 inches wide, with bright pink petals that curl backwards, showing off the unusually large, brilliant crimson eyezone. A pencil-thin crimson edging matches this region, ruffled and crimped elegantly. And since each plant sets anywhere from 25 to 28 buds, you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the blooms up close -- particularly since after the first heavy flush in early summer, 'Cherry Valentine' reblooms in July and August! Reaching 28 inches high, this evergreen variety is handsome even out of bloom. It spreads rapidly to 2 feet wide, filling in space gorgeously even in hard-to-plant sites such as along the baking-hot driveway. Once established in your garden, it is tolerant of drought as well as heat, humidity, and poor soil, but do bear in mind that it always blooms best in moist, reasonably well-enriched garden soil. Great for containers, too! Zones 5-9.
