Maroon Bat Plant
Tacca chantrieri
Maroon Bat Plant: Tropical plant with long, crinkled leaves and blooms of green to maroon, surrounded by
Big, lush leaves keep Bat Plant gorgeous even when not in bloom!

Add a Little Halloween to the Patio or Indoor Garden!
Looking for all the world like bats, the stunning blooms on this tropical perennial are whiskered, winged, and utterly unique!

For Gothic charm and Halloween decorating, nothing beats the eye-catching Bat Plant! This very unusual tropical perennial (straight from the monsoon forests of West Africa and southeast Asia) boasts enormous foliage and the most distinctive blooms you will ever grow. Colored green to maroon (deepening to near-black!), they appear to include wings and long, spooky whiskers!

Actually, the flower itself is the small cluster of 5 petals at the center of the bat-shaped display, and the "wings" are 2 pairs of bracts -- showy and attention-getting, especially with 10-inch "whiskers" dangling from both ends! Seen from the corner of the eye, these green-to-maroon blooms really do look exactly like a flock of bats, and you can't help but do a double take! The leathery foliage adds to the drama -- the leaves are very puckered, shaped like lances, and up to 22 inches long!

Bat Plant reaches about 3 feet tall and wide on the shady porch or patio or in bright, indirect sunlight indoors. Very tolerant of heat and humidity, it likes rich, fertile soil that stays slightly moist. If you want to plant it in the garden, try digging a hole large enough to put the whole pot into. That way you can easily move it indoors when the weather turns chilly!

If you like Bat Plant, try the white variety as well. After all, who ever heard of just one bat? Zones 9-11.
