Days to Maturity: 91 to 105

Superbissima Mix Petunia contains grandiflora types. Tender perennials (Zones 10-11), often grown as annuals, they bloom non-stop throughout the season, often to first frost. Heavy blooming, the plant blankets its foliage in extremely attractive, flamboyant flowers that can reach over 6 inches in diameter and have beautifully ruffled petals with fringy edges. The frilly flowers include both single and double bloom forms and are shades of pink, wine red, dark purple, and white. They attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

The Petunia h. superbissima varieties in this mix are tetraploid, with four times the number of chromosomes as monoploid varieties. Tetraploid varieties are characterized by robustness of flowers and plants, making them particularly resilient and resistant to difficult climatic conditions. Superbissima Mix is perfect for patio pots and window boxes but is also suitable for flower beds and borders. Planted alongside perennials and vegetables, petunias repel asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, tomato worms, a range of aphids, and many other pests.

Easy to grow and undemanding, petunias prefer full sun to light shade and average, medium moist, well-drained soil. They tolerate poor soils and is virtually disease and pest free and deer resistant. Although petunias are low-maintenance plants, pinching off the tops of established plants results in bushier plants with a heavier bloom and deadheading regularly encourages and prolongs flowering. Cutting back plants that have declined in summer heat promotes a later bloom as temperatures cool.

Direct sow petunia seed after the last frost and as soon as the soil is warm in spring or start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost and transplant after all threat of frost has passed.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

This seed comes as a pellet. Pelleted seeds are small seeds that have been clay-coated to make them larger and more uniform in size and shape, making them easier to handle when planting.

I was hesitant to buy 10 seeds for almost a dollar a seed, but I am a sucker for new varieties. I planted my ten seeds in containers and all but two germinated, a better respons than I expected. 80% germination is not bad for a modified seed, the first year it is out. I live in MD and we have had a hot, hot summer. These Superbissima petunias love it. I have them in a 14 inch container in full sun. They have bloomed and grown and bloomed some more. They put out long tendrils of flower covered stems which I am tying to plant stakes for height. They are just as happy there as winding themselves across the ground. I do feed them regularly and water because we have been having 90-100 degrees for weeks. They have not wilted at all. Even better, the deer came while I was on vacation and ate the tops and flowers off of all of my other petunias and impatients in my five other planters. They did not touch these, so when I came home, I have a planter overflowing with these Superbissima petunias and no other peturnias. I think the nursery should do a check for deer resistance. I think that the genetic changes they made might have changed the scent or taste. I am buying a packet of each of the colores for next year. These will be my go to flowers for an area over run with a herd of deer. T
