Remove plants from the box. Soak roses, roots only, for 24 to 48 hours before planting. Soak other bare root plants, roots only, for 15 to 30 minutes before planting.
Dig a hole that is 1½ to 2 times the depth and width of the root spread. Trim away any damaged or broken roots. For roses, cut the canes back to 5 to 6 inches.
Place the plant in the hole so that the crown (point where the trunk meets the roots) is at or slightly below the soil surface. For grafted roses, place the bare root plant in the hole so that the bud union is just below the soil surface. Spread roots out as evenly as possible.
Backfill the planting hole with a mix of existing soil and organic matter. Water as you are filling the hole. Add 4 inches of mulch to the base of the plant to conserve moisture and maintain soil temperature.
