How to Grow Roses in the Garden

Roses have a reputation for being high-maintenance, but the truth is anyone can grow them with the right conditions and care. As long as you have a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of morning sun (roses dislike morning shade followed by hot afternoon sun), you can enjoy gorgeous blooms in your garden. Even if space is limited, many rose varieties thrive in containers, making them perfect for patios, balconies, and small-space gardens.

step 1

Step 1: Prepare Bare Root Roses

If planting bare root roses, soak the roots in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before planting. Can’t plant right away? Keep them in their boxes for up to a week in a cool, dark place, sprinkling the roots with water every few days to keep them hydrated.

step 2

Step 2: Dig the Planting Hole

Choose a well-drained location. Dig a hole about 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide—large enough to allow the roots to spread out comfortably. Loosen the soil at the bottom and sides to encourage root growth.

step 3

Step 3: Check Drainage

Fill the hole with water and note how quickly it drains. Good drainage means the water should be gone within an hour. If it lingers, dig deeper or consider planting in a raised bed to prevent root rot.

step 4

Step 4: Position the Rose

Create a small mound of soil in the center of the hole to support the roots. Place the rose on top, making sure the crown or bud union (where the canes meet) sits at least one inch below the soil line—slightly deeper in colder climates.

step 5

Step 5: Backfill with Enriched Soil

Refill two-thirds of the hole with a mix of native soil and organic matter such as compost or peat moss. Tamp down gently, water thoroughly, then add the remaining soil. Tamp again and water well to settle the roots.

step 6

Step 6: Mulch for Moisture and Weed Control

Spread a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, compost, or bark chips around the base to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed growth. Water roses 3–4 times a week until you see new leaf growth.

step 7

Step 7: Mist for Faster Leafing

While establishing, roses benefit from moisture both above and below the soil. Misting the canes regularly can encourage quicker leaf-out and healthier growth.

With the right planting method and consistent care, your roses will reward you with vibrant blooms and lush foliage season after season.
