All-America Selections (AAS) National Winner 2024
Broccoli Purple Magic, an F1 hybrid, is a flower, or head, vegetable with very uniform, large, nicely domed heads with bright, tight beads and beautiful purple color that extends throughout the heads, stems, and leaves, making it an attractive option for an ornamental edible garden. It's more tender than traditional green broccoli and has a sweeter flavor. Broccoli is considered a superfood for its nutrient rich content.
This herbaceous annual, a member of the crucifer or brassica family, forms a big, stocky, upright plant with one main head and possible side shoots. Easy to grow, broccoli grows best in sunny locations with organically rich, well-composted, consistently moist, well-drained loams. Plants should be well-watered and should never be allowed to dry out or wilt. After harvesting the main head, continue caring for the plant to promote side shoots.
A cool-season, winter-hardy vegetable, the toughest of the cool-season crops, one of the first to be planted in the garden, broccoli can be direct sown into the garden as soon as the soil is workable in early spring, about 5 weeks before the last frost in spring. But it can also be started indoors and transplanted, spring and fall. It needs cold temperatures to germinate and grow, withstanding heavy frost and temperatures below 28 degrees, and becomes even sweeter with a light frost.
If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
