Description / Dianthus American Pie® Bumbleberry Pie
Royal Horticulturist Society Award of Garden Merit
A member of the Dianthus Whetman® American Pie® Collection, Bumbleberry Pie is an herbaceous perennial offering 3 seasons of interest. Blooming continually from spring to fall, the plant sets masses of large (to 2 inches) single blooms. The frilly flowers are saturated rose-pink and have a unique magenta center. Borne in clusters of 3 to 4 and held aloft lush foliage on sturdy stems, the flirty, spice-scented flowers attract bees and butterflies to the garden and make excellent, long-lasting additions to fresh floral bouquets.
Dianthus hybrids, commonly called carnations or pinks, are loosely tufted, quintessential cottage garden plants. Bumbleberry Pie has a compact, mounding habit of grassy silver-blue leaves and is shown to best effect when massed in landscapes or grouped in mixed beds, borders, and containers.
Bumbleberry Pie grows best in a sunny location with moderately fertile, evenly moist, well-draining, gritty loams, having a 5.5 to 6.2 pH. Bumbleberry Pie has improved disease resistance and is renowned for its cold and drought tolerance. The plant is also deer resistant. Although Bumbleberry Pie is low maintenance, deadheading spent flowers encourages blooms and trimming back in summer after blooming stimulates new growth.
