Description / Fothergilla Legend Of The Fall® Bottlebrush
A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Fothergilla Legends of the Fall® Bottlebrush is a native deciduous shrub offering 3 seasons of interest. Terminal spikes of bottlebrush-like white flowers appear before the leaves unfold in early spring. The honey-scented flowers sustain bees and butterflies and make excellent cut flowers. But its best feature may be the spectacular kaleidoscopic fall color in brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red.
A Fothergilla x intermedia, commonly called hybrid fothergilla or witch-alder, Legends of the Fall bottlebrush has an appealing informal natural habit, upright and multi-stemmed, and may spread by root suckers to form colonies. Remove suckers is spread is unwanted. Although the shrub makes a beautiful specimen, it is shown to best effect grouped or massed in borders, hedges, and foundation plantings.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, Legends of the Fall grows best in sunny to partially shady locations with organically rich, humusy, moist, well-draining soil, having an acidic pH. Although it grows well in shadier conditions, best flowering and fall color occurs with at least 4 hours of sun a day. Fertilize in spring. Pruning is not recommended. The plant is heat, drought, and shade tolerant and deer resistant.
A native plant, Legends of the Fall is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
