Description / Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume Mock Orange
A charming flowering deciduous shrub, Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume blooms heavily in late spring and reblooms well into summer. The large, pristine white fully double flowers appear in clusters along erect branches against a backdrop of medium green foliage. The flowers are sweetly scented with a strong, citrusy orange blossom fragrance, so they bring tons of bees and butterflies to the garden, but they also make great cuts for floral displays.
Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is a Philadelphus hybrid and, as such, is commonly called mock orange or sweet mock orange. The small, well-branched shrub has an upright habit and grows to a mature size of 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume dazzles in mixed beds, borders, and foundation plantings, especially when planted in groups, but it also makes a charming specimen or "thriller" in a container garden.
Mock orange is an easy plant to grow. It thrives in sunny to dappled sun locations with organically rich, moist soils, but it tolerates a wide range of soils, including alkaline soils, loam, and compacted clay, if they are well-draining. Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume resists disease. It requires no pruning, but if you desire to shape this shrub, do so after it has finished flowering.
Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is a hybrid cross made in March of 2011 between an unpatented and unpatented proprietary plant from the inventor's breeding program of Philadelphus x virginalis, accession no. G13598, (the female parent) and Philadelphus lewsii 'Snow Velvet' (the unpatented male parent).
