Description / Perennial Lupine Seeds
Perennial Lupine, also known as Wild Lupine or Sundial Lupine, is a native perennial wildflower prized for its striking spikes of deep blue to violet blooms and its vital role in supporting pollinators and native wildlife. A standout in native plant and meadow gardens, this hardy species offers both beauty and ecological benefits. Its deep taproot improves soil structure, while its nitrogen-fixing ability naturally enriches the soil. Lupine perennis is a larval host plant for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, making it an excellent choice for gardeners committed to conservation and biodiversity. The upright, 12- to 36-inch-tall plants produce colorful blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding vibrant life and movement to the garden throughout late spring and early summer.
Perennial Lupine is best used in native wildflower plantings, pollinator gardens, meadows, and naturalized landscapes. Sow directly into the soil in fall or early spring. For best results, scarify the seeds or soak them overnight before planting to improve germination. Once established, this low-maintenance plant returns year after year, spreading gently through self-seeding to form loose colonies. It pairs well with other native perennials and grasses, creating a balanced and resilient ecosystem.
This lupine thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or low-fertility soils. It does not tolerate heavy clay or overly rich soil. Blooms appear from late spring to early summer, with foliage remaining attractive throughout the growing season. Cold hardy and drought tolerant once established, Lupine perennis brings long-lasting color, structure, and ecological value to landscapes season after season.
