Description / Papaver Collection Poppy
Create a stunning spring (in southern regions) or summer (in northern regions) display with the Poppy Collection, featuring two complementary varietiesPapaver rhoeas Red and Papaver nudicaule 'Pink Ruffles'. Each collection includes five roots of each variety, prepackaged and labeled for convenience. These poppies grow 18 to 24 inches tall, showcasing their blooms on long, bristly stems against delicate gray-green foliage. The vibrant red and soft pink flowers attract bees and butterflies to your garden, while their graceful beauty makes them perfect for cut-flower arrangements. To keep your bouquets fresh, harvest flowers as buds begin to open and sear the stem ends.
Both varieties are clump-forming perennials (Zones 3-8) that grow larger with time without spreading aggressively. Ideal for beds, borders, and mass plantings, these poppies also make charming indoor flowers with the right preparation.
Poppy Collection varieties are cold-hardy and thrive in cooler weather, flourishing in sunny locations with well-drained, rich soil. They also perform well in average soils but cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions. In warmer climates, they may struggle in summer heat but thrive in spring and fall. Protect your poppies in Zones 3-6 by adding a layer of mulch or pine needles during winter. After blooming, allow plants to naturally die back and stop watering to maintain healthy roots. These poppies are deer resistant and require minimal care once established.
Plant in spring, spacing roots 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose a permanent spot carefully, as established poppies do not like being moved. If relocation or division is necessary, plan for fall to minimize disruption.
