Description / Black Magic® Hybrid Tea Rose
Nothing short of bewitching in the landscape or the vase. Black pointed, ovoid buds slowly unfurl to reveal truly spellbinding, dark garnet flowers with an even darker picotee edging. Appearing continuously from early to late summer, they are carried on long, strong, 24- to 28-inch stems. Each high-centered bloom reaches a size of 4 to 5 inches across and is packed with 30 to 40 thick, velvety petals that hold their color extremely well. They have little to no fragrance, but you won't even care about that, due to their superb visual appeal. Plus, they make great companions to fragrant roses or other plants, in garden or vase. The extremely long-lasting blossoms are especially dramatic in fresh bouquets.
Black Magic® reaches a mature size of 5 to 7 feet tall and up to 4 feet wide, displaying lush glossy, dark green foliage that's proved to be very mildew resistant. It makes a truly impressive garden specimen, although it can also be grown in large patio containers.
This hybrid tea rose performs best in average, well-drained soil in full sun, although it has been reported to be somewhat shade tolerant.
Spring pruning should include the removal of old canes and dead or diseased wood. Also, cut back canes that cross over each other. If you live in a warm climate, cut back the remaining canes by about one third. Colder areas will probably require a bit more pruning than that. Provide spring freeze protection, and if grown in a container, winter protection.
