Description / Buxus North Star® Boxwood
A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, North Star was bred in Michigan and is ready to tackle the toughest winters. The shrub is nicely shaped, vigorous, and very adaptable. It blooms in early spring; however, the flowers are insignificant. If you live in a cold-winter climate and have watched boxwoods suffer in severe temperatures, North Star® is the evergreen shrub your landscape has been waiting for.
Many boxwoods turn brown or lose their luster during winter, but not North Star. Its dense foliage remains glossy and dark green year-round, and the plant itself remains nicely rounded, as if you'd just pruned it. In fact, pruning is never necessary unless you wish to trim the shrub into a specific shapeit always looks formal and symmetrical.
North Star has a very well-branched, compact, mounded, globe-like habit that makes a fine low hedge, accent planting, or front line for the shrub border. The shrub also makes an excellent "thriller" in a container garden.
Easy to grow, it thrives in sun or shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil but is quite adaptable to varying soil types. It is drought-tolerant, deer and disease resistant, and cold hardier than most other boxwoods.
North Star was bred by Gary Katerburg and has proven a dependable, vigorous performer in gardens throughout its hardiness range.
