Description / Hydrangea Tiny Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea
Oh, Tiny Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea lives up to its name, all right, with lovely lacecap blooms that repeat near season's end no matter what the weather has chosen to do! This super-compact Tiny Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea is prepared to wow you from border or container with handsome deciduous foliage and two flushes of magnificent blooms every year!
The flowers are irresistible, their unusual lacecap form making them look delicate (ha!) but their vigor keeping them fresh and lovely for many weeks. Superb for fresh and dried arrangements, Tiny Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea stand upright on sturdy stems held above the foliage. They will be blue in acidic soil, pink in alkaline, or possibly even white! But regardless of how they begin, as the blooms age they all turn a uniform, pleasing shade of deep pink.
The first, and larger flush of blooms occurs in early summer in most climates, arising on old wood (which means that if you want to prune this shrub, do so right after the final blooms pass in early fall, never in late winter or early spring). In mid- or late summer, there will be another season of flowering, this one on new wood (the current season's growth). What this means is that if a freak late frost kills the first buds, you will at least be assured of a late-season flowering! And if you are growing Tiny Tuff Stuff™ in zone 5, you may only have that final flush each year -- but what a boon to have a Hydrangea that can flower at all with your frosty springs!
After the flowers, the show continues when the large, bright green leaves turn burgundy for fall. They will remain on the shrub for several weeks, showing off their autumn finery beautifully, before dropping for winter. Wow! That's a lot of color from such a small shrub!
No more than 2 feet high and wide, Tiny Tuff Stuff™ is a quick grower, establishing itself readily in moist soils receiving full sun (in the far north only) to part shade. Compact enough to put in a container on the patio or deck, it also makes an excellent foundation subject, woodland garden standout, and happy companion to perennials in the border as well as larger shrubs and trees. Versatile and easy, it asks only for plenty of water and a touch of relief from hot summer sun. (If you think it may be getting too much sun, compensate with extra water.)
Tiny Tuff Stuff™ grows best in hardiness zones 5 to 9. We cannot ship this plant to the following locations: Canada, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, or Hawaii. Zones 5-9.
