Description / Rhododendron Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea
A member of the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs, Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea is a striking deciduous shrub, reaching 3 to 6 feet in both height and width. This hardy native shines in spring with abundant, rounded clusters of vibrant salmon-hued flowers accented by bright orange spots. The blooms are wonderfully fragrant and attract a host of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a lively addition to any garden.
A Rhododendron hybrid, commonly known as azalea, Sweet Reward Coral features an upright growth habit. Perfect as a specimen plant or massed in beds, borders, or foundation plantings, this azalea thrives in a shaded garden setting and brings a lush, natural touch.
Easy to care for, Sweet Reward Coral grows best in sunny to partly shaded areas with moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter and an acidic soil pH of approximately 5.0 to 5.5. However, it can adapt well to most soil types, including clay.
As a North American native, Sweet Reward Coral azalea is naturally suited to local climates and soil, thriving with minimal intervention. Once established, it requires no fertilizers or excess watering, promoting sustainable gardening practices. Native plants like this azalea contribute to biodiversity, offering essential shelter and food for wildlife and pollinators while minimizing the need for pesticides.
Developed from North American native species by Dr. Jim Ballington of NCSU, Sweet Reward Coral is an environmentally conscious choice for gardens that burst with life and beauty.
