Description / Monarda Mix Bee Balm
Monarda Mix Bee Balm brings a bold splash of color to your garden with hybridized native wildflowers that grow 24 to 48 inches tall. From July through August, this mix showcases dense clusters of tubular blooms in vibrant shades of pink, purple, and red, perched atop square stems. The flowers' citrusy fragrance and nectar-rich composition attract hummingbirds, bumblebees, and butterflies. Both the flowers and the mint-scented leaves are edible, perfect for infusing teas and desserts with fresh, garden-grown flavor.
As varieties of Monarda didyma, commonly called bee balm or bergamot, these hardy perennials (Zones 4-10) are vigorous growers that spread through rhizomes and self-seeding. Monarda Mix thrives when massed along water features, incorporated into butterfly or cottage gardens, or used as a striking border plant. Their upright habit and vivid hues also make them perfect for container displays.
These versatile plants grow best in sunny locations but tolerate light shade, with afternoon protection helping in hot climates. Bee balm prefers rich, moisture-retentive soils and consistent watering to prevent drying out. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and coolness. Removing spent blooms encourages prolonged flowering and reduces self-seeding. Naturally deer-resistant, Monarda Mix is both low maintenance and visually captivating.
In spring, plant Monarda Mix bee balm roots 1½ to 2 inches deep, spacing them 18 inches apart. Choose the planting location carefully, as established plants prefer not to be disturbed.
Native to eastern North America, Monarda didyma varieties thrive in local climates, requiring minimal maintenance once established. By supporting pollinators and deterring pests, these plants contribute to a flourishing and sustainable garden environment.
