    All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2022

Bauer, an organic oakleaf lettuce, is a leafy vegetable. The plant sets attractive dense, rosette-shaped heads that are approximately 8 inches when fully mature. The lobed leaves are thick and crunchy and have a unique dark green color and a delicious, sweet flavor, with baby and medium-sized heads offering the best texture and flavor.

This herbaceous annual, a member of the chicory (Asteraceae) family, is a fast-growing, high-producing plant with a compact, uniform habit. Versatile and super easy to grow, Bauer prefers full sun to part shade and fertile, organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Loose, well-tilled soil and consistent water are important for the best germination. The tighter heads allow for closer spacing in the garden and can grow almost anywhere, including in containers and window boxes. The plant grows well hydroponically too. Bauer has high resistance to downy mildew Bl-EU:16-37/Bl-US:1-9; lettuce leaf aphid Nr:0; and lettuce die-back TBSV. It has intermediate resistance to lettuce mosaic virus LMV:1.

A cool-season, semi-hardy vegetable, one of the first to be planted in the garden, lettuce seed can be direct sown into the garden as soon as the soil is workable in early spring, about 2 weeks before the last frost date. For fall harvest, sow seeds about 8 weeks before the frost date. Plants can also be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting, spring and fall. Lettuce needs cold temperatures to germinate and grow and can withstand light frost and temperatures in the 28 to 32°F range and becomes even sweeter with a light frost. Succession plantings every 2 to 3 weeks is recommended for continual harvest.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
