Description / Sweet Summer Love Clematis
At last, a Sweet Autumn Clematis in a new color . . . or should we say "colors"?! These starry blooms combine deep red to magenta tones with rich grape purple, creating a multicolored look that is stunning. Fragrant and very, very freely borne, they arise first in mid- and late summer, then again all fall!
Anyone who has grown Sweet Autumn Clematis can only wish for a gardenful of them, and Sweet Summer Love Clematis brings this fantasy to life, and in glorious color! The scent is powerful and sweet, and the bloom production stunning. A mature Sweet Summer Love Clematis plant will easily set more than 2,000 blooms in a single summer-through-fall season on plants that reach 8 to 12 feet long and up to 6 feet wide. This is excess at its most glorious!
Sweet Summer Love Clematis is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® plant chosen for its exceptional beauty and performance. To be selected for this group, it was thoroughly tested in trial gardens all around the world, and found to have superb health and vigor as well as prolific, richly colored blooms.
Sweet Summer Love comes to us from noted Polish breeder Szczepan Marczynski, and is a Group III variety for pruning purposes: late-blooming and easy to care for! It flowers only on new growth, so in late winter or early spring you will want to cut it back to about knee height. This will not only assure you of plentiful blooms, but will cause this climber to be more lush and full than it was the previous year. The joy of Clematis is that, if given the proper pruning, it improves with each passing season!
If you are new to Clematis, you are in for a wonderful treat. Though slow to establish, once they are content, they take off magnificently. For best results, make sure their tops (the aboveground growth) are in sun and their bottoms (the roots) are in shade. Mulch generously around the plant to ensure that the soil stays cool and consistently moist, and follow pruning group instructions. That's all there is to it! Zones 4 to 9.
