What Are The Quickest Fruits To Grow?

If you’re looking for fruits that grow quickly, some varieties can produce in just weeks or months. Choosing the right ones means you won’t have to wait years to enjoy fresh, homegrown fruit.

  • Strawberries – Ever-bearing and day-neutral varieties can produce fruit in as little as 3-4 months from planting. They grow well in containers, raised beds, or hanging baskets.

  • Raspberries – Some fall-bearing raspberries (like ‘Heritage’) can produce fruit the first year if planted early in the season.

  • Melons – Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew can be ready to harvest in about 70-90 days from seed.

  • Figs – Some fig varieties, like ‘Brown Turkey,’ can produce fruit within the first year if grown from a cutting.

  • Tomatoes (Technically a Fruit!) – Many cherry tomato varieties, like ‘Sun Gold’ or ‘Sweet 100,’ start producing in about 60 days.

For the fastest results, start with cuttings, grafted plants, or bare-root options when possible. With proper care, these fruits will give you a harvest much sooner than traditional fruit trees!

How Do You Grow Fruits from Seed?

Starting fruits from seed takes patience, but it can save you money and introduce you to unique varieties. Some seeds need special treatment, like chilling or soaking, so check the requirements before planting.

  1. Pick Quality Seeds – Use fresh, non-GMO seeds from a reliable source. Some fruit seeds (like apples and peaches) may need cold treatment before they’ll sprout.

  2. Prep the Seeds – Soak, scratch, or chill seeds if needed. This helps break dormancy so they’ll germinate faster.

  3. Use Loose, Well-Draining Soil – A light seed-starting mix prevents mold and lets roots spread easily. Avoid heavy garden soil, which can suffocate young roots.

  4. Keep Soil Warm and Moist – Most fruit seeds sprout best between 65-75°F. Cover trays with plastic wrap or use a heat mat to keep moisture in.

  5. Provide Strong Light – Once seedlings appear, place them under grow lights or in a bright window for 12-16 hours daily. This prevents weak, spindly stems.

  6. Transplant at the Right Time – Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, move them to larger pots. If planting outdoors, harden them off first by slowly exposing them to outdoor conditions.

  7. Be Patient – Some fruits, like melons, grow fast, while others, like citrus and apples, take years to produce.

Starting from seed lets you grow varieties you won’t find in stores, and caring for seedlings from the beginning makes them stronger in the long run.
