What is the Best Season to Plant Thyme?

Thyme thrives when planted in early spring after the last frost, though it can also be started indoors and transplanted once the weather warms up. If you plan to start your seedlings inside, consider using a kit like our Bio Dome to maintain proper humidity and encourage air pruning.

In warmer climates, fall planting is an option, allowing thyme to establish before the next growing season. It grows best in USDA hardiness zones 5-9, where it can survive as a perennial and continue producing year after year.

Thyme prefers well-draining soil and minimal watering once established. Regular trimming encourages bushy growth and a continuous supply of fresh leaves. Thyme is also a great companion plant in the garden, helping to deter pests while adding a fragrant touch to the landscape.

Is Thyme Easy to Grow from Seed?

Yes, Thyme seeds are fairly easy to grow with the right conditions. While they do require patience during the germination process, giving them the proper light, warmth, and well-draining soil and you will have healthy, flavorful thyme.

Following a few simple steps can help you grow a healthy and productive thyme plant.

  • Starting Indoors: Thyme seeds benefit from an early start indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Using a seed-starting mix and maintaining temperatures between 65-70°F (18-21°C) encourages better germination.

  • Sowing Seeds: Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them down without covering them completely, as thyme seeds need light to germinate.

  • Moisture and Light: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and place the container in a sunny location or under grow lights for at least 6-8 hours a day.

  • Transplanting Outdoors: Once the seedlings have grown a few inches tall and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into well-draining soil with full sun exposure.

  • Long-Term Care: Established thyme plants require minimal watering, and occasional pruning, and benefit from feeding with a balanced organic fertilizer.

Does Thyme Prefer Sun or Shade?

Thyme flourishes in full sun, needing at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. While it can tolerate some light shade, the best growth and most flavorful leaves come from plants grown in bright, sunny spots.

If you’re growing your thyme indoors, be sure to use a growing light that can provide the most crucial benefits direct sunlight would have outdoors.
