Description / Colocasia Royal Hawaiian® Blue Hawaii Elephant Ear Bulb
Colocasia Royal Hawaiian® Blue Hawaii Elephant Ear is a tropical showpiece that transforms any garden or container into a lush retreat. Growing 36 inches tall, and up to 50 inches under optimal conditions, its heart-shaped matte green leaves feature striking bluish-purple veins and wavy edges. The semi-glossy, burgundy-colored stems enhance its bold, exotic look. Occasionally, it may produce yellowish-green flowers (spathes), but its striking foliage takes center stage.
This frost-tender Colocasia esculenta variety thrives in Zones 8-12 with a compact, upright growth habit. Ideal for container gardens, it's also stunning indoors in a bright location or as a striking addition to pond margins and rain gardens. Plant it solo for a bold statement or pair it with colorful flowers to create a layered tropical effect.
Easy to care for, Blue Hawaii requires consistently moist soil and flourishes in sunny to partially shaded areas. Rich, fertile soil is key, and in regions with intense summer heat, providing some afternoon shade helps maintain its vibrant appearance. Its deer-resistant quality makes it a reliable and attractive choice for low-maintenance gardens.
Plant the 9- to 11-inch rhizome in mid-spring when soil and air temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Space bulbs 18 to 24 inches apart and bury them 2 to 4 inches deep. In cooler climates, dig up the bulbs in fall and store them in a cool, dry spot where temperatures remain above 45°F. Replant the following spring for another season of bold tropical beauty.
