Description / Narcissus Geranium Daffodil Bulbs
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit 1995; Wister Award of the American Daffodil Society 2016; Award of Merit Haarlem Award 1931 (Netherlands)
Narcissus Geranium is an award-winning heirloom daffodil that has captivated gardeners since 1930 with its sweet fragrance and reliable ability to perennialize. This charming tazetta variety is known for its abundant clusters of bicolor blooms, each featuring creamy white petals that beautifully frame a frilled, bright orange cup. Rising to a height of 14 to 16 inches in early spring, these daffodils bring a cheerful and aromatic presence to any garden. The flowers are borne in clusters of 4 to 6 per long, strong stem, creating a stunning display that not only delights the senses but also attracts pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
As a member of the Narcissus tazetta family, commonly known as daffodils, Geranium is celebrated for its upright habit and fast growth rate. This variety is an excellent naturalizer, multiplying easily to form sprawling clumps of long, flat, strap-like foliage topped with showy blooms that return year after year. In ideal conditions, adequate space, sunlight, water, and fertilizer, these daffodils can thrive for decades, bringing continuous beauty and fragrance to your garden each spring.
Geranium daffodils are versatile and can be planted in groups or masses to create striking displays in mixed beds, borders, or containers. They are particularly effective when planted in large sweeping drifts across open woodland areas, under deciduous trees, or in smaller groupings in front of shrubs. Their ability to mix well with ground covers and other spring-blooming bulbs and flowers makes them an excellent choice for creating layered garden designs. Additionally, Geranium daffodils can be forced indoors, providing their delightful fragrance and bright blooms during the winter months.
Narcissus Geranium is a bulbous perennial that is incredibly easy to grow and maintain, making it a top choice for any gardener. These daffodils prefer areas with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, and they typically grow and perennialize well in USDA Zones 5-9. For best results, plant the bulbs in sunny to partly shady locations with rich, fertile, well-draining soil that has a neutral to acidic pH.
When planting, space the bulbs about 8 inches apart and plant them 6 inches deep to ensure they have enough room to grow and multiply. Water the daffodils during their growth period, but avoid overwatering, as bulbs do not tolerate soggy soils. To encourage robust flowering, feed the bulbs with a balanced fertilizer, such as Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food, as soon as growth begins in the spring. After the flowers have bloomed, allow the foliage to die back naturally, this process is essential for storing energy in the bulbs for next year's growth. Once the leaves have fully faded, they can be cut back.
Geranium daffodils are relatively pest-free and are resistant to deer, making them a durable and low-maintenance addition to any garden. Whether you're looking to create stunning garden displays or enjoy their sweet fragrance indoors, Narcissus Geranium offers a timeless elegance that will be cherished for generations.
