Key Features of Kale Seeds

  • Highly Nutritious: Packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants.

  • Versatile Harvest: Enjoy tender baby greens or let the plants mature for full-sized leaves.
  • Easy to Grow: Suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Caring for Your Kale Seeds: A Guide to Strong, Healthy Greens

At Park Seed, we understand that great gardens begin with the right care. Kale is a cool-weather crop that thrives with a bit of attention and care, rewarding you with crisp, nutrient-packed leaves. Follow these steps to ensure your kale seeds grow into vibrant, productive plants.

  •  Start Indoors for Early Success: For an early start, sow your kale seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Use a high-quality seed starting mix, and plant the seeds ¼ inch deep in trays or small pots.
  • Transplanting Outdoors: Once the seedlings are 3-4 inches tall and the danger of frost has passed, it’s time to transplant them into your garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining, rich soil.
  •  Direct Sowing in the Garden: If you prefer to direct sow, plant kale seeds ¼ inch deep in rows, spacing the seeds 1 inch apart. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to 12-18 inches apart. Kale prefers cooler temperatures, so it's best to plant in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest.
  • Watering and Fertilizing: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging the plants. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps the soil cool.
  • Harvesting Your Kale: Kale can be harvested at any stage, from tender baby greens to mature leaves. Simply pick the outer leaves as needed, leaving the center to continue growing. Regular harvesting encourages more growth and ensures a continuous supply of fresh greens.
