Description / Lycium 'Firecracker' Goji Berry
Unleash the power of the superfruit in your own back yard with the Lycium 'Firecracker' Goji Berry. This fruit-bearing deciduous shrub blooms in stunning purple-white flowers early summer and adorns the garden with vibrant scarlet-red berries by fall. Known for its early and abundant fruiting, from the 2nd year onwards, it reaches peak fruit production in its 4th or 5th year. Enjoy these juicy, sweet berries fresh from the branch, or freeze them for later use. The fruits can also be dried to add a healthful boost to your meals.
As a variety of Lycium barbarum, also known as wolfberry, matrimony vine, or box thorn, 'Firecracker' Goji Berry is a dense, well-branched shrub with cane-like stems. It exhibits a moderate growth rate and a mounding, suckering habit. If left to its own devices, it will naturalize, forming a rich thicket, but it can be pruned into a more tree-like form.
Belonging to the Boxthorn family, goji berries are native to Southeast Europe and Asia, and are relatives of the nightshade plants, such as potato, tomato, eggplant, tobacco, and chili pepper. Goji berry thrives in sunny to dappled shade spots with rich, moist, well-drained soil, but is also adaptable to a wide range of soil types. This hardy plant is resistant to disease, pests, deer, and rabbits.
The shrub is self-pollinating and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.
Ships as a 1-year bareroot plant
