Description / Arabian Coffee Plant Seeds
Days to germination: 42 to 56
Sow seeds any time of year to grow your own Arabian Coffee Plant. This bushy foliage houseplant is unusual and attractive with a dense habit. Arabica coffee houseplant has impressively broad leaves that are glossy, dark green, and deeply corrugated. This coffee houseplant is sure to start conversations, and while not likely to produce a crop of coffee beans in your home, its unique and appealing verdant growth is a wonderful addition to your indoor houseplant garden.
When you're ready to germinate, soak the seeds of Coffea arabica for 48 hours before sowing. Arabian coffee houseplant seeds need a humid and bright germination environment. Try the Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit to maintain adequate moisture. Once seedlings are mature enough to transplant, place several in your container with compost, then place them in a warm location away from drafts and direct sun.
In spring, once established, the Arabian Coffee Plant may produce sweetly scented white flowers. When growing commercially and producing coffee in fields, the plants develop a drupe (single seed) that when mature turns deep red to purple and typically contains two seeds (coffee beans). It's important to note that, other than the seeds, the plant parts are toxic to humans and animals.
Water your Arabian Coffee Plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between each watering. Houseplants should be fed regularly between March and September when they are in active growth. Coffee plants appreciate a humid atmosphere. If your location doesn't provide that, stand plants on a tray filled with pebbles and water. As the water evaporates it will increase humidity around the plant. Misting the foliage daily with a fine spray will also help to improve humidity. Keep the coffee plant's soil damp but not overly wet.
