Description / Bergera Curry Leaf Tree
Bergera Curry Leaf Tree, a semi-dwarf tropical to sub-tropical tree or shrub, is renowned not only for its culinary virtues but also for its ornamental appeal, seamlessly integrating into an edible landscape. It consistently bears clusters of fragrant white flowers sporadically throughout the year, which mature into small, bluish-black fruits. These fruits have a subtly sweet, peppery flavor with a hint of citrus, though caution is advised as the seeds are toxic. The tree's small, slender leaves are a culinary delight worldwide, offering a strong flavor reminiscent of citrus, anise, and lemongrass. When cooked, these leaves present a milder, slightly pungent taste with a nutty aroma.
In a garden setting, the Bergera Curry Leaf Tree reaches an impressive height of 6 to 15 feet at full maturity. When cultivated in containers, the tree remains considerably smaller, but it can be pruned to maintain any desired size and shape, in garden or container. This adaptability makes it an ideal choice for cooler climates, where it can be grown indoors as a houseplant during winter months, requiring ample sunlight from a south-facing window.
Also known by its scientific names, Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii, this broadleaf evergreen (Zones 9-11) is characterized by its loose, upright habit. It boasts small, slender, oval-shaped leaves that grow pinnately along the stems, making it a striking accent or specimen plant.
The Bergera Curry Leaf Tree thrives in temperatures ranging from 65° to 90°F and requires at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily. It prefers rich, evenly moist, well-drained loams and should be planted in a warm, sheltered spot outdoors to protect it from frost. Watering should be moderate, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings. To encourage robust growth, apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the spring and summer. This self-pollinating tree will bear fruit independently, without the need for pollen from other varieties.
NOTE: Do not eat the seeds. The seeds are toxic.
