Typically grown as annuals, the dwarf biennials, or short-lived perennials, in the Toto® Mix Rudbeckia, also known as black-eyed Susans, offer spring through fall interest. Early and abundantly blooming, these black-eyed Susans set showy, daisylike, 2- to 3-inch flowers in shades of bright yellow, gold, and mahogany with a domed chocolate-brown cone. Borne singly on strong, stiff, well-branched stems, the flowers attract birds and butterflies and make excellent cut flowers. The seed heads offer winter interest as well as tasty treats for birds, or they can be used in dried arrangements.
Toto® Mix Rudbeckia varieties have an upright, compact, clumping habit of coarse, hairy, lance-shaped leaves and a fast growth rate. Rudbeckias are classic cottage garden bed and border plants and popular container plants.
Rudbeckias prefer full sun and organically rich, loamy-sandy to sandy humus, moist, well-drained soil, but they tolerate a wide range of soils as well as heat and drought. And deer typically avoid them. Although they are low maintenance plants, the flowers may self-seed, so consider planting in naturalized areas or removing flowers before they go to seed. Deadheading spent flowers also encourages new blooms.
Direct sow rudbeckia seed after threat of frost has passed when daytime temperatures range between 60 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit and night temperatures range between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit or start seed indoors and transplant seedlings into the garden.
If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
