Description / Gladiolus 'Mon Amour' Bulbs
'Mon Amour' is a large-flowering gladiolus that reaches 36 to 60 inches in height, creating a graceful vertical accent in any garden. Blooming in midsummer, its ruffled spikes are filled with silky bicolor flowers in delicate pastel shades of lavender and yellow. The blooms open sequentially from the base to the tip of the scape, ensuring a long-lasting display. These florist-quality flowers make exquisite monofloral bouquets and add charm to mixed garden plantings.
A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, also known as gladiolus or sword lilies, 'Mon Amour' is a tender perennial in Zones 8-10. This variety looks stunning when grouped in borders, beds, or containers. For taller plants, staking may be needed in windy locations to keep the flower spikes upright.
'Mon Amour' is easy to grow, thriving in full sun to partial shade and preferring rich, well-draining soil that holds enough moisture for roots to thrive. Improve heavy clay or sandy soils with organic materials such as bark or peat moss for better results. Fertilize lightly after planting and again in summer to encourage abundant blooms. Water thoroughly during planting and regularly while the plants are growing and flowering. A layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Plant bulbs in warm soil after frost danger has passed, spacing them 6 to 8 inches apart and planting them 6 to 8 inches deep. For continuous blooms, stagger plantings every two weeks through spring. After flowering, let the foliage grow until it turns brown or frost is near. Dig up, clean, and store the corms in a cool, dry spot (40-50°F) for winter.
