Description / Gladiolus 'Passos' Bulbs
'Passos' is a stunning large-flowering gladiolus that adds height and elegance to the summer garden. Growing 48 to 58 inches tall, its graceful flower stalks are topped with lavender blooms, each accented by purple stripes on the petal edges and deep purple throats highlighted with a splash of red. These long-lasting blooms rise above sword-like foliage, opening from the bottom up for an extended display. Perfect for cutting, these florist-quality flowers shine in both monofloral and mixed bouquets.
A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, also called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Passos' is a tender perennial in Zones 7-10. For maximum impact, plant in groups or masses in beds, borders, containers, or rock gardens. In windy areas, staking may be required to keep the tall stalks upright.
'Passos' is simple to grow, thriving in sunny to lightly shaded locations with rich, well-draining soil that retains moisture. Improve sandy or clay-heavy soils with organic amendments like bark or peat moss to support optimal growth. Fertilize lightly after planting and again in summer. Water thoroughly during planting and consistently throughout the growing season to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Mulch to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Plant bulbs in a wind-protected spot after frost danger has passed, spacing them 4 to 6 inches apart and planting them 4 to 6 inches deep in warm soil. Stagger plantings every two weeks for continuous blooms. After the flowers fade, allow the foliage to grow until it browns or frost approaches. Lift, clean, and store the corms in a cool, dry location (40-50°F) for winter.
