Description / Gladiolus 'Purple Flora' Bulbs
Gladiolus 'Purple Flora' is a standout summer bloomer, reaching 48 to 60 inches tall and adding height and drama to any garden. Its slim flower scapes rise gracefully above a base of sword-shaped foliage, creating a striking vertical element. The ruffled, orchid-like blooms are a rich, dark purple, opening gradually from the base of the scape upward for a long-lasting display. Perfect for cut arrangements, these florist-quality blooms are both vibrant and elegant.
A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, also known as gladiolus or sword lilies, 'Purple Flora' is perennial in Zones 7-10.These tall flowers look their best when planted in groups in garden beds, borders, containers, or rock gardens. In windy conditions, staking may be necessary to support their towering height.
Simple to grow, 'Purple Flora' thrives in sunny to partially shaded locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Improve sandy soils that dry too quickly or heavy clays that retain water by adding organic amendments like peat moss or bark. Fertilize lightly after planting and again in summer with a balanced plant food. Keep the soil evenly moist by watering thoroughly at planting and consistently during growth and bloom. Add a mulch layer to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
Plant bulbs in warm spring soil after frost danger has passed, spacing them 4 to 6 inches apart and planting 4 to 6 inches deep. For continuous blooms, plant bulbs every two weeks during the season. After the blooms fade, let the corms grow until the foliage browns or frost is imminent. Lift, clean, and store the corms in a cool, dry spot at 40-50°F over the winter.
