Description / Vitis Elvira White Grape
Elvira White Grape is an ornamental and prolific grapevine. This deciduous beauty blooms in mid to late spring with charming, tiny yellow-green flowers that exude a sweet, musky fragrance. Elvira, a white variant of Vitis labrusca and Vitis riparia, is known for its abundant yield of medium-sized, thin-skinned white grapes, which mature in early to mid-fall. These grapes are ideally suited for wine making, resulting in a crisp, delightful white wine that perfectly complements dishes like roast duck and other wild game.
With its hardy, vigorous nature, Elvira is known for its lack of cultural issues and recommended for challenging growing areas. During its first year, allow the vine to grow freely. By the second or third year, it should be pruned heavily and supported with posts or stakes, leaving only 2 or 3 buds on the strongest stem. To optimize fruit production, maintain a regimen of regular pruning and spraying. Elvira can be artistically trained on a wire trellis, espaliered against a courtyard wall, or draped over an arbor, pergola, or fence, creating a stunning garden centerpiece.
Thriving in sunny spots with deep, moderately moist, well-drained soil, Elvira is adaptable to a variety of soil types, and does especially well in clay and loam enriched with organic matter. Ensure the site is sheltered from harsh winter winds for optimal growth. Light cultivation and mulching are beneficial for this variety. Elvira boasts cold hardiness and resistance to mildew, and being self-fertile, it can bear fruit without the need for cross-pollination from other varieties.
Grapes ship as 1-year-old plants.
