Description / Espoma Organic® Charcoal
Made in USA
Espoma Organic Charcoal is a natural soil conditioner made from 100 percent hardwood that helps improve drainage and overall soil structure. Produced through a high heat process without oxygen, this high carbon material creates pore space in potting mixes, allowing better airflow and water movement. The result is healthier roots and improved growing conditions for container plants. With no additives or fillers, it provides a clean and reliable solution for gardeners seeking better soil performance.
Ideal for containers, houseplants, and terrariums, this charcoal helps prevent excess moisture buildup and supports balanced growing conditions. It is especially useful in pots without drainage holes, where a base layer can help manage water retention. In terrariums, it plays an important role in maintaining a clean and stable environment by supporting drainage layers and reducing excess moisture. Safe for people, pets, and the environment, it fits easily into organic gardening practices.
For containers with drainage holes, mix up to two cups per cubic foot of potting soil and blend thoroughly before planting. For containers without drainage, add a one to two inch layer at the bottom before adding soil. In terrariums, layer charcoal over gravel and beneath peat moss to create proper drainage and separation. With its ability to improve soil structure and drainage, Espoma Organic Charcoal supports healthier plants in a wide range of growing setups.
