Description / Purple Ball Basil Seeds
Fleuroselect Gold Medal 2016
Beautiful, edible, and very aromatic, Purple Ball is a perfect basil for an edible landscape or a pretty patio pot. This unique herb is highly decorative. It grows into a rounded ball shape that's packed with tiny deep-purple leaves, and it blooms in small, tubular purple flowers. The leaves have an excellent flavor and can be dried or covered in olive oil and frozen for later use.
An Ocimum basilicum variety, commonly called basil, Purple Ball is a half-hardy annual that forms a neat, compact plant, growing 10 to 12 inches tall with a similar spread. A cut-and-come-again herb, it's perfect for a kitchen garden; but it's equally appropriate for use in the landscape. Purple Ball makes a stunning accent plant in garden beds and borders and a gorgeous filler for window and balcony boxes.
Basil loves hot weather and plenty of sunshine, but it needs rich, consistently moist soil to thrive. Mulch the plants to retain moisture, and water heavily during dry spells. However, Purple Ball is more drought tolerant than most.
Purple Ball basil seeds can be started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting into warm soil when temperatures are consistently above 65°F.
