Description / Hydrangea Gatsby Pink® Oakleaf Hydrangea
You will love this exciting new Gatsby Pink® Oakleaf Hydrangea. A selection of the native American species, Gatsby Pink® Oakleaf Hydrangea makes itself right at home in our sunny to partly shaded borders, foundation, and woodlands. Huge bloomstalks appear in summer and remain into fall, opening white and then turning pink. And the oakleaf-shaped foliage that gives this shrub its name begins green, but turns red and burgundy for autumn. Talk about multiseason interest.
Gatsby Pink® Oakleaf Hydrangea blooms for the entire summer, beginning with the first warm weather. These tall, thick wands arise all over the well-branched shrub, pointing up and out and simply packed with florets. The blooms open white, then quickly turn pink and continue to blush as the weeks pass. You will see many shades open at once from midsummer into early fall. And the blooms are lovely as fresh or dried cut-flowers.
The foliage is almost as handsome as the blooms on this Hydrangea. Large and deeply lobed, it is a rich shade of forest green in spring and summer, then turns deep red to burgundy and maroon for autumn before dropping. The bare winter skeleton of Gatsby Pink® is attractive as well, showing off the interesting patterns of the bark.
Gatsby Pink® is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® plant chosen for its exceptional beauty and performance. To be selected for this group, it was thoroughly tested in trial gardens all around the world, and found to have superb health and vigor as well as spectacular color. We really admire its multiseason appeal and ease of cultivation. This is a great shrub for a new gardener as well as a seasoned pro.
Give this Oakleaf Hydrangea any well-drained soil receiving at least some sun. In the south it prefers more shade, while farther north it can be grown in full sun and good protection from harsh winter winds. Gatsby Pink® blooms on old growth, so if it should need pruning, do so right after it blooms in late summer or early fall, to give it a chance to set new wood before the first freeze. Feed in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer to increase the growth potential and bloom power even further. You will love the performance and enduring beauty of this long-lived shrub.
