Description / Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard Seeds
Days to Maturity: 60 days from direct sow
Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard is a time-tested heirloom variety celebrated for its impressive size, outstanding vigor, and superb flavor. Producing large, crinkled dark green leaves with thick, tender white stalks, this highly productive chard grows up to 24 inches tall and thrives in a wide range of climates. With a mild, slightly earthy taste, Fordhook Giant is ideal for fresh salads, sautéing, soups, and stir-fries. Known for its heat and cold tolerance, it offers multiple harvests from a single planting and is one of the most dependable leafy greens for extended-season gardening.
A standard swiss chard that has been cultivated since the early 1900's, Snowball Y's bold foliage adds texture and color to edible landscapes, raised beds, and container gardens. Pair it with companion plants like carrots, onions, beans, or radishes to enhance garden health and productivity. This chard's ability to regrow after harvesting makes it ideal for cut-and-come-again harvesting, providing continuous fresh greens for your kitchen.
Fordhook Giant grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It can be planted in spring for summer harvests or in late summer for fall and early winter crops. Highly adaptable and cold hardy, it can even tolerate light frosts. It is best direct sown in the garden as soon as soil can be worked and can be harvested in about 60 days. It is also packed with vitamins A, C, and K.
