Description / Russell Lupine Seeds
Russell Lupines offer bold, cottage-garden charm with tall, vibrant spires in a stunning array of colorsblue, pink, red, white and bicolor blends. These herbaceous perennials are known for their dramatic vertical presence and pollinator-friendly blooms, making them a favorite for gardeners who want to add structure, color, and movement to their landscape. Reaching 12 to 36 inches tall, Russell Lupines create an eye-catching display in garden beds, borders, and wildflower meadows. Their deeply lobed, palmate foliage adds texture even before flowering, while the towering bloom spikes attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in late spring to early summer. Deer-resistant and cold-hardy, Russell Lupines are as tough as they are beautiful.
Russell Lupines are best planted in groups for maximum visual impact. Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalized plantings, they also perform well as cut flowers. Sow seeds directly into the garden in early spring or fall or start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. For best results, scarify or soak seeds overnight before planting. Once established, lupines require minimal care and return reliably year after year.
These hardy perennials prefer full sun to partial shade and grow best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Avoid heavy clay or overly rich conditions, as these can reduce vigor. Blooming in late spring to early summer, Russell Lupines may rebloom lightly in late summer if deadheaded. With their upright form and colorful palette, they provide multi-season interest and long-lasting beauty in perennial beds.
