Description / Mangave Art & Sol® 'Night Owl'
The Mangave Art & Sol® 'Night Owl' adds a bold, dark elegance to gardens and containers. This compact succulent from the Proven Winners® Art & Sol® collection grows only 6 to 8 inches tall, with a spread of 16 to 18 inches, making it perfect for small spaces that need a big visual impact. Its rosette features broad, arching leaves edged with spiny margins that create a striking architectural symmetry. With dense, dark purple spots that deepen to an almost black hue in full sun, 'Night Owl' brings a captivating, mysterious touch to landscapes, container gardens, and houseplant collections.
As a second-generation hybrid of Manfreda and Agave, x Mangave 'Night Owl' combines the best traits of both, offering exceptional drought tolerance and rapid growth. Its mounded, upright habit makes it equally suited as a specimen plant or in mass plantings to showcase its unique texture and color. While frost-tender, 'Night Owl' grows as a perennial in warm climates (Zones 9-11) and as an annual or overwintered indoor plant in colder zones. This resilient succulent is a low water wonder for xeriscapes and rock gardens. Its adaptability to different moisture levels also makes it a great choice for mixed plantings with companions like agastache, dianthus, lavender, and stonecrop.
'Night Owl' thrives in sunny locations with well-draining soil. While it tolerates average moisture, it performs best in dry, poor soils, making it a great choice for challenging garden spots that are exposed to heat and drought. Deer and rabbits tend to avoid it, and it's highly resilient against harsh conditions, so it's easy-care for even the toughest spaces. In containers, it offers height and color contrast in mixed arrangements. For successful establishment, a single application of Organic Diehard™ Transplant Stress Relief can be helpful.
With native heritage from the dry regions of Central and North America, Mangave 'Night Owl' exemplifies the sustainability of native plants, requiring minimal water, no fertilizers, and little intervention once established. This promotes biodiversity, offering sustenance and shelter to local wildlife and pollinators, making it a beautiful and eco-friendly addition to your garden.
